Jaw Pain Reducing Treatments and Migraine Relief
Temporomandibular joint disorder (TMJD or TMJ disorder) is a condition that can cause chronic headaches, migraines, and worn/broken teeth. It can arise due to problems like:
- Misaligned teeth
- Chronic grinding (bruxism)
- Sleep apnea
- Popping or clicking of the joint
When not treated, TMJ disorder causes the teeth to bite together improperly. Not only does this cause accelerated wear to your tooth enamel or existing restorations, but it radiates muscle fatigue through your jaw and into the tissues throughout your face. That’s why so many people experience pain or headaches.
Managing Jaw Pain
Treating TMJ disorder effectively will depend on the cause of the condition. In some instances, we will use Botox to relax the muscles surrounding the jaw, reducing the strain and likelihood of headaches.
In other situations, it may be appropriate to wear a bite splint or mouth guard at night. This reduces strain from clenching as you sleep, as it creates an area of buffer space between the teeth, thus relaxing the joint.
It may also be useful to correct your tooth alignment using orthodontic therapy. Doing so creates a healthy bite relationship, so that your jaw does not have to compromise its function as you bite and chew.
Schedule an Evaluation
At State of the Art Dental Group in Rockville, we work closely with an MRI radiologist to assess the anatomical structures of your jaw and surrounding structures. We also evaluate your bite, jaw function, and any pathology associated with the TMJ. Depending on the outcome of your exam, we may recommend Botox, orthodontics, or a bite guard as long as surgery is not necessary.
